That depends! The jewelry must be of proper size and style for the piercing you’d like to get. It must also be YOUR jewelry (not a friend’s, not family’s). If not purchased at the studio, the brand and material must be verifiable to be sure it meets APP standards for initial piercing jewelry. Jewelry must be dropped off at least one day in advance for processing through a separate ultrasonic and a packaged autoclave sterilization cycle.

Downsizing is the act of shortening the post (barbell or flat back of your jewelry) once the initial swelling has gone down to prevent irritation, snags, or migration. Not all piercings will require a downsize - we will let you know our recommendation for your specific piercing to make sure it heals as smoothly as possible!
COST
When getting a piercing downsized that was performed at Reliquary Body Arts, there is no service fee; you only pay for each post or barbell, keeping the original beads or decorative ends. If we are downsizing a piercing that was performed at another studio, there is a $5 service fee plus the cost of the barbell or post. Plain titanium straight barbells, flat-back/labret studs, curved barbells, and circular barbells without ends range from $10-18 depending on the type of jewelry. -
We use a single-use hollow needle for each piercing. Jewelry for initial piercing is implant-grade and meets APP (Association of Professional Piercers) standards; ASTM F136 Titanium, Niobium, 18 karat gold rings, and 14 karat gold ends. We do not use guns or any sort of spring-loaded cartridges. Any tools used during the procedure are soaked in an enzymatic solution, processed in an ultrasonic, and sterilized in an autoclave that is regularly tested. All jewelry is sterilized before use in a fresh piercing.
-
Jewelry is either internally threaded or threadless (press-fit). Threaded jewelry has ends that screw on, and threadless jewelry pulls apart. Rings are either seamless and twist open, or clickers that operate on a hinge. We do not carry any butterfly backs or externally threaded jewelry.
-
A bit, though everyone is different! However, with gentle hands and a quick, efficient technique, we do our best to keep you comfortable and get the uncomfortable parts over with quickly so you can get to admiring your new piercing and beautiful jewelry. We request avoiding any topical anesthetic (numbing cream) as they don’t fully numb the entire area of the body piercing and can sometimes cause the tissue to behave differently.
-
If you must hide a piercing for work or school, there are discreet options to choose from that still allow you to be pierced using safe materials. Glass retainers are best to use for medical procedures, especially when your piercing is still healing.
